Get in touch

PotWatch is a one-person project. If you build one, improve one, or just want to argue about the right way to clamp a thing onto a saucepan, I would like to hear from you.

Who made this

Ilia Kuzmin

I am a Senior Service Engineer and the founder of 3DIY.ie, based in Celbridge, Co. Kildare, working across Kildare and Dublin. My day job is appliance repair and 3D printing — taking broken things apart, working out why they failed, and making the part that nobody sells any more.

That is more or less where PotWatch came from. Spending your working life inside other people's appliances gives you strong opinions about how domestic machines ought to behave: they should be honest about what they know, they should not fail silently, and they should not need an app.

I am an inventor, and PotWatch is not the only idea I have. It is the one I chose to build first and give away, because it is small enough to finish and useful enough to be worth finishing. There are others on the bench — some more ambitious, some with real commercial potential — that need more than one pair of hands and one evening at a time.

So if you are looking for someone who designs, builds and actually ships physical products: I am open to collaboration. Partners, manufacturers, investors, or just other engineers who enjoy this kind of problem — get in touch.

What I would like to hear

Especially useful.

A better clip

The clamping mechanism is the weakest part of the current design. It slackens over time and can let the device tip. If mechanical design is your area, this is the open problem.

You built one

Did it work? Did anything break? Did a probe still die on an induction hob despite the grounded tube? Failure reports are more valuable to me than praise.

Working together

I have ideas beyond this one and I am looking for people to build them with — collaborators, manufacturing partners, or investors who back engineers who finish things.

Nothing here is for sale

PotWatch is given away deliberately: firmware under GPL v3, hardware and documentation under CC BY-SA 4.0, nothing patented and nothing trademarked. Build it, change it, sell devices made with it — just keep your version as open as this one.

If you publish a version, crediting it takes one line: PotWatch by Ilia Kuzmin — https://potwatch.net — CC BY-SA 4.0. Modified from the original. The assembly page explains exactly what is and is not required.
